A Leak in the Sky

SEOUL, KOREA- “First the typhoon, now the rain. What’s next?” This
thought must be on every Korean citizen’s mind this summer. The rain that’s
pouring endlessly is causing disasters that are very harmful to the community.
Summer
time means monsoon season in Korea.
Rain was expected by everyone, but the typhoon and the large amount of rain was
a horrible surprise. Experts believe that the weather is due to the wind and
altitude. From the north, cold air is blowing towards the south while the warm
air from the south is blowing towards the north. Therefore, when colliding,
rain is produced.
While
the rain ruins everyone’s moods, it also causes serious accidents. In the
south, high winds and heavy rain causes erosion and light floods. However in
the middle,
the rain pours constantly for
about 24 hours. Each day they get almost 3 or 4 in.
of rain. All this rain causes
serious floods and erosion putting homes, buildings,
roads and wildlife to ruin.
The rain is so high, citizens cannot tell the difference
between the roads and
ditches. Already the rain has claimed several lives and made hundreds either
injured or homeless.
Almost
everywhere, traffic jams and flight delays are occurring. Travelers are stuck
in the airport. A residence in Seoul
said,” The bus trip which should’ve lasted a hour took two hours because the
streets were ruined by the rain.” However, there are signs of the rain clearing
up. The citizens of Korea
are desperately waiting for the sun to come out and shine on their faces. Now
the only thing they have to worry about is the heat wave that will hit Korea soon
after the rain stops.

FLORIDA-
South and Boca Grande Florida
have an iguana problem. Invading Florida,
these reptilians are eating gardens, carrying bacteria and laying waste to
people’s properties. They’re a nuisance to the community.
Cute
and adorable when six inches long, residents in Florida kept them as house hold pets.
However when these scaly pets grow to a length of six feet, they are often
kicked out of the house, free to roam the city. Now, there are thousands of
them living in the city.
They eat plants from gardens and
fruits from trees while carrying bacteria. With their sharp claws and long
tail, they will scratch, bite and slap when cornered. The more serious problem
however is in an island near Florida
called Boca Grande. Instead of the nice green ones, this island is invaded by
black- spiny- tail iguanas.
From
ruining landscaping to sparking power outages, they weaken sand dunes and eat
sea turtle eggs. Also carrying salmonella (a disease that can cause food
poisoning) they are very harmful to people. The thing that hurts most however
is when they whip their spiky tails or clamping down on a finger with their
sharp teeth.
To
fix this problem, Lee
County commissioners
approved a new tax. Residents of Boca Grande have to pay to get rid of these
intruders. By the end of July, the commissioners will decide how much the
residents should pay.
Iguanas
are originally from Central and South America, a place where the weather is
similar to Florida’s.
Therefore, the reason to why these iguanas stayed in Florida
